WHO RC76 Delegates Advocate Active Lifestyles at Addis Ababa Summit

Addis Ababa — Participants in the 76th Session of the World Health Organization Regional Committee for Africa (RC76) participated in a symbolic health walk on Sunday from the Adwa Victory Memorial to Meskel Square.

The walk emphasized physical activity as a means to promote healthier lifestyles across Africa.

Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Mekdes Daba, African health ministers, officials, WHO representatives, and athletes like Ethiopian Athletics Federation President Comandör Sileshi Sihine joined the event.

The initiative aimed to convert health policies into actionable steps by encouraging daily physical activity and raising awareness about preventing non-communicable diseases.

The route started at Adwa Victory Memorial, commemorating Ethiopia’s historical victory and African resistance to colonialism, then followed city pedestrian paths to Meskel Square.

Organizers noted that regular exercise reduces risks of conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases, fostering healthier communities.

The event underscored Africa’s commitment to translating health goals into daily practices beyond policy discussions.

The 76th WHO Regional Committee for Africa, scheduled for August 24–28, 2026, in Addis Ababa, will gather over 600 delegates, including health ministers, global leaders, and partners from the WHO African Region’s 47 member states.

During the five-day meeting, attendees will review progress toward health targets and strategize new resolutions.

The session is expected to identify actions to strengthen health systems, advance universal health coverage, and improve emergency response frameworks.

The gathering will also serve as a key forum for Africa and global partners to enhance health cooperation and address pressing continental health challenges.
