Williams team principal James Vowles commended the Grove-based team’s sustained factory operations for successfully delivering a significant upgrade initiative for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, despite securing only a single point over the weekend.
The squad arrived at the Baku City Circuit equipped with a comprehensive update package, featuring two new chassis, a substantial weight reduction program, and a revised aerodynamic configuration.
“First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who has worked diligently around the clock to bring this update to Baku,” Vowles stated during an Instagram video. “It’s quite an accomplishment to simultaneously introduce two new chassis, reduce the car’s weight significantly, and implement aerodynamic changes, all delivered to the circuit within a short timeframe.”
“We began discussing this initiative several months ago, and it’s remarkable to witness its completion this weekend.”
The new package demonstrated potential during qualifying, with Carlos Sainz advancing to Q3, though the Grand Prix presented greater challenges. Sainz managed to secure one point with a 10th-place finish, though he faced an ongoing investigation regarding a suspected practice start infringement. His teammate Alex Albon encountered a crash on lap 31.
“Qualifying showcased our progress, yet the race proved inconsistent,” Vowles noted. “At times, particularly with Carlos, we struggled to replicate the performance levels achieved in qualifying. However, we’ve identified potential areas for improvement, and I’m proud of Carlos for maintaining his composure to secure that point.”
“Alex’s situation is particularly disappointing. He was driving exceptionally well until a gust of wind prevented him from managing the braking zone adequately, leading to a collision with the wall. This is a inherent risk of street circuits like Baku, where such variables can drastically impact performance.”
“We’re already preparing the rebuilt car for the Malaysian Grand Prix, which takes place next week. While this was the opening event of a triple-header, it marks a promising start, though there’s clearly more work ahead for the team.”
