A woman in her 30s is in critical condition after suffering a shark bite at Coogee Beach on Saturday morning.
New South Wales Ambulance confirmed the patient sustained serious injuries to her arm and leg in the incident, which occurred shortly after 11:00 a.m. Multiple emergency crews provided urgent treatment on the sand before she was airlifted to hospital.
According to NSW Police, bystanders pulled the woman from the water and initiated first aid until paramedics and officers arrived. Police continued care at the scene and cleared nearby Coogee Oval to allow a CareFlight helicopter to land for the emergency transfer.
Authorities have closed Coogee Beach as well as neighbouring Clovelly and Bronte beaches as a precaution. Lifesavers at Tamarama Beach, located to the north, also cleared the water and closed that beach shortly after the attack.
The woman will be transported to a trauma centre once her condition is stabilised for the flight.
