How To Play Wordle

Wordle is a daily word puzzle where the objective is to guess a hidden five-letter word within six attempts. After each guess, the game provides feedback to narrow the possibilities:

• Green: The letter is correct and in the right position.
• Yellow: The letter is in the word but in the wrong position.
• Gray: The letter does not appear in the word at all.

Use these clues to refine your guesses. A new puzzle is released every day, shared by players worldwide. Many also engage in Competitive Wordle against friends, family, or the Wordle Bot. The rules for competitive play are detailed at the end of this post.

I review my game daily with Wordle Bot to analyze performance. You can check your own score via the Wordle Bot tool.

My opening guess, BOAST, proved highly effective, leaving only three possible solutions. Uncertain which was correct, I played BOTCH to eliminate a potential trap. That move left BOOTH as the only viable answer, securing the win in three guesses.

Competitive Wordle Score

Both the Bot and I solved the puzzle in three guesses, resulting in a tie. Each earns 1 point. The running totals for July are now:

How To Play Competitive Wordle

• Guessing in 1: 3 points; 2: 2 points; 3: 1 point; 4: 0 points; 5: -1 point; 6: -2 points; Miss: -3 points.
• Beating an opponent: +1 point. Tying: 0 points. Losing: -1 point. Sum these for your daily score. Maintain a running tally or play day-by-day.
• Fridays offer 2XP, doubling all points earned or lost that day.

Today’s Wordle Etymology

“Booth” derives from the Old Norse búð, meaning a temporary shelter, stall, or dwelling. It entered English through Scandinavian influence, initially referring to a simple hut or market stall before broadening to its modern senses.
