The 2026 FIFA World Cup has evolved into a prominent stage for expressions of solidarity with Palestine, even though the Palestinian national team is not participating, as noted in an opinion piece by American scholar David Vine.
Writing for Foreign Policy in Focus on 14th July 2026, Vine argued that the tournament has featured extensive public demonstrations of support for Palestinians, amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza and growing limits on pro-Palestinian protests in certain nations.
The article notes that fans, athletes, and coaches from a range of nations—such as Egypt, Scotland, Brazil, South Korea, Morocco, Mexico, Türkiye, Norway, Senegal, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Algeria, and Spain—publicly voiced support for Palestinians and advocated for their rights to life, liberty, and the right of return.
The piece adds that solidarity went beyond individual remarks, with Palestinian flags flown inside stadiums, some players and coaches bearing them, and chants of “Free Palestine” echoing both within venues and in nearby public spaces.
Additionally, numerous spectators were observed wearing jerseys bearing the Palestinian national football team’s colors during the matches.
Moreover, some supporters hung banners that read “Expel Israel from FIFA” and “Red Card for Israel,” referencing the sport’s disciplinary measure that ejects a player for a serious foul.
The author’s analysis and observations of fan conduct throughout the tournament are presented herein. FIFA has not released any official comment regarding the reported demonstrations.
