The idea of a humanoid robot folding laundry, loading the dishwasher, or vacuuming the living room once belonged to the realm of science fiction. But as robotics companies accelerate their efforts to build machines capable of navigating everyday environments and performing household tasks, the notion of delegating domestic chores to a robot is rapidly moving from fantasy to possibility.
Just because robots can handle these tasks, however, doesn’t mean people are eager to invite them into their homes.
Live Science recently surveyed readers on whether they would be willing to let a humanoid robot take over their household chores, and the results shed light on just appealing — or unappealing — the concept of a robotic housekeeper truly is.
As of September 15, more than 600 readers had responded, and 42% chose to let the robot “take my chores, please.” This enthusiasm carried over into the comment section, where one reader admitted, “I would, but I doubt my wife would approve of the job the robot did.” Another reader fired back: “Good for her. Take her household responsibilities for a year and report back.”
The next-largest group, accounting for 36% of voters, chose the opposing view: “No, I don’t trust it with my dishes (or data).” Humanoid robots learn movements and tasks by building world models from their surrounding environments. While the technology remains relatively primitive — leading to some clumsy, though often entertaining, mechanical mishaps — it appears that such practical limitations, rather than privacy concerns, are currently the primary obstacle to wider deployment.
It was these mechanical concerns that dominated the conversation among other commenters. One reader wrote, “I don’t think robots are dexterous enough to handle dusting. Maybe vacuuming, but probably slow and clumsy when it comes to moving furniture.” That same reader also questioned whether a robot could tell the difference between objects that belong in the dishwasher and those that don’t, or whether it could manage the more complex task of mopping hard floors after rearranging furniture.
“Maybe robots can maintain houseplants,” they added, suggesting that equipped with a moisture meter and an extensive horticultural database, robots might actually serve a more practical role as automated waterers in large commercial nurseries.
