Zilla Fatu officially signed with WWE NXT on August 19, 2026.
The latest ratings battle between WWE NXT and AEW Dynamite concluded with a decisive advantage for NXT, driven by the highly anticipated debut of Zilla Fatu.
WWE NXT secured 683,000 total viewers with a 0.14 rating in the key 18-49 demographic during this week’s episode, marking a significant 16% increase in total viewership and 56% growth in the demographic category. This represents NXT’s strongest performance since September’s NXT Homecoming event.
AEW Dynamite Struggles in Lead-Up to Major Events
In contrast, AEW Dynamite attracted only 587,000 total viewers with a 0.10 rating in the 18-49 demographic, reflecting an 11% decline in overall viewership and 29% drop in the demographic compared to previous weeks. This marks Dynamite’s lowest rating since June 10, 2026.
The trend of declining viewership ahead of major pay-per-view events has persisted, with Dynamite’s go-home show for AEW Redemption dropping 11% in total viewers (706,000) and 20% in the demographic (0.12) from the previous week. Similarly, the go-home show for Forbidden Door experienced a 7% decrease in total viewership (616,000) and 17% decline in the demographic (0.10).
NXT vs. Dynamite Ratings Comparison
- WWE NXT Ratings (Aug. 18, 2026) | 683,000 total viewers; 0.14 in 18-49 demographic
- AEW Dynamite Ratings (Aug. 19, 2026) | 587,000 total viewers; 0.10 in 18-49 demographic
As AEW prepares for its upcoming go-home show for All In, the current trajectory suggests continued challenges, particularly given the show’s recent 10-week low performance.
Zilla Fatu, the son of legendary wrestler Umaga and descendant of the renowned Anoa’i wrestling family, made his impactful NXT debut last week by defeating Cruz Montana and Grayson Waller. His official contract signing this week generated additional interest for WWE’s developmental brand, contributing to NXT’s improved ratings following the conclusion of the popular AfricaNXT era featuring stars like Oba Femi, Trick Williams, Carmelo Hayes, Je’Von Evans, and Ricky Starks.
NXT continues to maintain its dominance in head-to-head competition against AEW, having won five consecutive matchups when both shows air simultaneously—a pattern that occurs annually in October when MLB playoffs preempt Dynamite’s regular timeslot. This competitive landscape is expected to persist into October 2026 with both brands fielding refreshed rosters.
AEW Dynamite Faces Challenges with Extended Broadcasts
Recent concerns about scheduling overruns have affected AEW Dynamite’s presentation, with broadcasts extending 34 and 21 minutes beyond their scheduled times in the past two weeks. These extensions have reportedly frustrated viewers and talent alike, despite AEW’s branding around delivering premium wrestling content.
“People in AEW are telling me nobody likes these overruns. They’re saying, ‘Why is this show going so long? I left and went home and the show was still going,'” commented Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Live regarding the ongoing issue.
While extended programming typically impacts ratings negatively, the July 15, 2026 episode demonstrated that compelling content can overcome timing issues. Despite featuring a women’s main event that didn’t begin until eight minutes into the overrun, the six-woman tag team match featuring Mercedes Moné and Divine Dominion against Willow Nightingale, Maya World, and Hyatt delivered AEW’s best viewership in two years with 786,000 viewers and a 0.15 demographic rating.
This success highlights the potential value of women’s wrestling in driving ratings, despite no female performer having ever main-evented an AEW pay-per-view. As AEW continues to navigate its booking strategies under Tony Khan’s leadership, consistent execution and strategic programming decisions will be crucial for improving future viewership outcomes.
