Wyatt-Hodge Shines with Century as England’s Experienced Campaigner Celebrates Special Tournament Moment]
Natalie Wyatt-Hodge has always been one of England’s most compelling cricketers. While she often displays a playful demeanor, that should never be mistaken for anything other than fierce determination.
As a player, she has shown remarkable resilience throughout her career.
Wyatt-Hodge made her debut in the same Mumbai ODI as Heather Knight, and the pair remain the longest-serving members of the current England setup.
From the 2017 World Cup victory at Lord’s to last year’s Ashes series in Australia, they have witnessed the full spectrum of England cricket.
While Knight commanded centre stage nine years ago as captain, Wyatt-Hodge was primarily a substitute, featuring in just five matches during the trophy campaign.
Now 35, she still has opportunity to write the defining chapter of her international career.
During Wyatt-Hodge’s parental leave, discussions emerged about who would open the batting when required.
Sophia Dunkley’s form struggled, while Amy Jones was promoted up the order. However, England’s small but potent right-hander was always the certainty at the top.
Returning bleary-eyed from sleepless nights, she scored 29 in her comeback match against India in Bristol last month. Three subsequent single-figure scores followed, yet England remained unwavering in their support.
“Some people thrive under pressure and scrutiny,” noted former teammate Katherine Sciver-Brunt, now in the commentary box.
“This is exactly the kind of environment she excels in.”
It was only fitting that when Wyatt-Hodge reached three figures, captain Nat Sciver-Brunt stood opposite her at the bowler’s end.
Like Wyatt-Hodge, Sciver-Brunt is both a cricketer and mother. She too celebrated a century at last year’s 50-over World Cup, also against the Same opposition.
“It was wonderful having her in the middle to share that hundred – two mothers,” Wyatt-Hodge reflected.
“I felt nervous toward the end with the crowd cheering me on. Nat reminded me to breathe and time it properly. I was truly determined.”
As Wyatt-Hodge soaked in the applause and exited the field, Dunkley met her by the boundary.
A strengthening sense of unity is emerging within this squad, with Wyatt-Hodge serving as one of its most beloved figures.
“It was deeply emotional. Several teammates had tears in their eyes,” Wyatt-Hodge recalled.
Graham Gooch popularized the phrase ‘Daddy Hundred’ – this was a ‘mummy’ version worthy of the occasion.
Few deserve this moment of celebration more than Wyatt-Hodge.
