The companies alleged that Apple had favored OpenAI’s ChatGPT over competing artificial intelligence assistants.

Elon Musk’s X Corp and SpaceXAI have withdrawn their antitrust lawsuit against Apple, ending allegations that the iPhone maker conspired with OpenAI to exclude rivals from the generative artificial intelligence market.
The companies said in a court filing on Monday that they had dismissed their claims against Apple. They did not state why they changed course or whether a settlement had been reached.
Filed in August 2025 in federal court in Fort Worth, Texas, the lawsuit accused Apple and OpenAI of violating US antitrust law by making ChatGPT the only generative AI chatbot built into Apple’s iPhone operating system.
X Corp and SpaceXAI, which develops the Grok chatbot, argued that Apple’s arrangement gave ChatGPT access to billions of potential user prompts through Siri, Apple’s Writing Tools and iPhone camera features. They said the agreement cut competitors off from users and hindered their ability to expand.
The companies also claimed Apple discriminated against rival AI chatbots through its App Store by delaying app reviews and manipulating search rankings.
In its complaint, X Corp and SpaceXAI alleged that Apple and OpenAI had combined their strengths in the smartphone and AI markets to entrench their respective dominance. They said the defendants had violated the Sherman Antitrust Act and Texas antitrust law.
Apple and OpenAI separately requested that the case be dismissed last year. US District Judge Mark Pittman rejected both motions in November, allowing the lawsuit to move forward.
OpenAI accused Musk of waging a “campaign of lawfare” against the company in a court filing. Musk has brought several legal actions against OpenAI, including a separate lawsuit alleging that the company had abandoned its original mission to create artificial intelligence for humanity’s benefit in favor of profit. OpenAI successfully defeated that case in May.
X Corp and SpaceXAI said they would continue pursuing their claims against OpenAI, which remains the case’s sole defendant. They did not explain why they were abandoning their claims against Apple.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer application in history following its launch in late 2022.
