Xabi Alonso explains reason for early Jorrel Hato substitution

Alonso on Hato sub

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has revealed why Jorrel Hato was withdrawn at half-time during the match against Hull City on Saturday.

The Blues drew 2-2 with the Tigers at Stamford Bridge after taking an early lead. They then conceded twice through defensive errors, leaving Chelsea supporters frustrated at failing to beat a newly promoted side.

Hato had a difficult afternoon and was implicated in the opening goal before his half-time substitution.

After the match, Alonso confirmed that the decision was tactical and that he wanted a player with a different profile.

He said: “Tactical. We wanted a player with another profile, that with Pep [Chavarria] and Jorrel, it’s different and that was the decision.”

Chelsea remain fourth in the league table on seven points, although their position could fall before their next fixture at Brentford.
