The Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan explained the circumstances surrounding Kevin Costner’s sudden departure from the series.
The Oscar‑winning actor, who portrayed John Dutton, was a central figure in the first four seasons and the first half of the fifth and final season. In the latter half of the fifth season, his character was written out amid speculation of creative disagreements and an official statement citing scheduling conflicts.
In 2024, Costner attributed his exit to the production’s altered shooting schedule and criticized his collaborators for not speaking up for him. In an interview with The Bill Simmons Podcast, Sheridan offered his perspective.
He noted that Costner’s contract originally covered three seasons, after which his character’s youngest son was to assume leadership. He envisioned the ranch’s future as central to the narrative.
Sheridan added that the network was reluctant to lose Costner, and the series’ massive popularity kept the actor on for two additional seasons. He suggested that the network found it hard to relinquish a top‑rated show before its natural conclusion.
Eventually, Costner decided to pursue his own projects. Sheridan reflected that the original three‑season plan had been abandoned, and that staying longer did not benefit the series.
