San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York will miss Sunday’s home opener against the Miami Dolphins, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. York was in Australia for the team’s regular-season opener but has also skipped the San Francisco matchup.
Sources say York is staying away to avoid creating a distraction after being arrested last month on suspicion of engaging in prostitution. The NFL is expected to announce any potential discipline “soon.”
The Niners opened their season with a 27-7 upset victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on Sept. 10.
York pleaded no contest on Aug. 24 to two misdemeanor charges after being arrested in Ohio. Court records obtained by ESPN show he allegedly responded to an undercover ad on a known prostitution website and arranged to have sexual activity with the woman for $140.
York was arrested upon arriving at the meeting location with the phone used to arrange the encounter, according to the records. He was originally charged with misdemeanor engaging in prostitution and possession of criminal tools, but the prostitution charge was amended to misdemeanor disorderly conduct as part of a plea agreement.
The NFL stated that it was “aware of the matter which will be reviewed under the personal conduct policy.”
