KARACHI: A young physician from Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) was fatally shot during a robbery near Clifton on Monday, police said.
South Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Syed Asad Raza told Dawn that the attack occurred near the Teen Talwar landmark, where Dr. Akash Kumar lost his life.
According to the DIG, Dr. Kumar was standing outside a bank with his father and cousin when armed suspects attempted to rob them.
“During the incident, gunfire broke out, resulting in the doctor’s death. A bank security guard also opened fire, creating a cross‑fire situation,” Raza said.
“The suspects fled after seizing approximately Rs2.5 million,” he added.
Dr. Kumar, who was unmarried, had been employed at JPMC for two years. After the necessary legal procedures, his body was transferred from JPMC to the Chhippa morgue.
Police have obtained CCTV footage from the area to aid in identifying the assailants and have gathered GPS coordinates for geo‑fencing analysis.
Initial investigations indicate that the fatal bullet was fired by the bank security guard, who has since been arrested. A spent cartridge from the guard’s pistol was also recovered.
Details released by DIG Raza revealed that Dr. Kumar had withdrawn Rs5 million from a private bank near Dilpasand Sweets at around 12:30 pm and made purchases totaling Rs50,000.
After leaving the first bank, the doctor, his father and cousin walked a short distance to another bank. Four suspects on two motorcycles, who had been following them, caught up with the group.
The private security guard, believing the robbers intended to loot the bank, entered the premises and drew his pistol. Police were alerted through the Madadgar‑15 system at the same time.
As the suspects attempted to seize a bag containing Rs2.5 million from Dr. Kumar, they fired two shots, and the guard also discharged his weapon, Raza said.
The doctor was hit in the chest and was taken to a private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
