YouTube Defends Keeping Sydney Synagogue Shooting ‘Crisis Actor’ Video Online During Antisemitism Inquiry]
A Google executive defended YouTube’s decision to allow a video claiming a survivor of a deadly Sydney synagogue attack was a “crisis actor” to remain online during a government inquiry into antisemitism in Australia.
Rachel Lord, Google Australia’s manager, testified on Tuesday that the content met platform standards despite complaints from survivor Arsen Ostrovsky, who was attacked online after images showing injuries circulated on social media following the December attack that killed 15 people.
“The decision to allow the video to remain has been reviewed at quite senior levels,” Lord said. “We have spent a lot of time thinking about where we draw the line and we continue to re-evaluate where we are doing that.”
During the inquiry, lawyer Richard Lancaster referenced the disputed video transcript to avoid displaying sensitive imagery publicly.
