Glasgow indie rockers Yummy Fur were active throughout much of the 1990s before disbanding in 1999, the year keyboardist Mark Gibbons tragically took his own life. Bandmates Alex Kapranos and Paul Thomson later co‑founded Franz Ferdinand, which eventually recruited former Yummy Fur guitarist Dino Bardot. (Incidentally, Lawrence Worthington, who preceded Thomson on drums for Yummy Fur, went on to perform with Male Nurse and Country Teasers.)
Although frontman John McKeown, who later fronted a 1990s project, reunited a version of Yummy Fur for a U.S. tour in 2010, the group had not issued new material since 1998. That is set to change. A new LP, Everybody Talks About The Weather, arrives in September through Upset The Rhythm, recorded by the core trio of McKeown, Thomson, and Brian MacDougall.
Yummy Fur are scheduling a handful of UK shows to support the release, and the lead single “Unity Over Europe” is available now. The track drives forward with a heavy, snarling rhythm and sharp, high‑pitched guitars—reminiscent of the Pixies recording for AmRep, or Mclusky fronted by a smoother vocalist à la Kapranos. (Kapranos does not appear to be part of this reunion, though the timbre of McKeown’s voice suggests Franz Ferdinand’s frontman may have drawn inspiration from his ex‑bandmate.)
The band offers the following note:
“Unity Over Europe” was the first song we crafted when we began considering new material to move beyond the end‑of‑the‑pier feel of merely playing our hits. We envision it as a two‑act play featuring three central figures: Diana, Unity, and Nancy Mitford. In Act One, the trio is confined within a flat, two‑dimensional Francis Bacon triptych that rotates through space‑time, akin to the formidable antagonists in Superman II. Act Two sees Unity loaded into the nose cone of a V‑2 rocket, launched from Peenemünde toward London—a gesture that mirrors the final death trajectory in Thomas Pynchon’s *Gravity’s Rainbow*.
