Capital is increasingly flowing into select areas of the cryptocurrency market, with privacy coins like Zcash (ZEC) and Monero (XMR) leading recent gains. Meanwhile, memecoins such as PEPE and M have also experienced rebounds, while established assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum remain largely stagnant. Analysts suggest this trend reflects a strategic shift among traders toward more niche and speculative investments.

Zcash Enters Top 10 Amid Record Rally

According to data from Kaiko, Zcash (ZEC) has surged from relative obscurity into the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, now valued at approximately $21.4 billion.

CoinGecko data indicates that ZEC has increased by roughly 2,076% since January 1, 2025, climbing from around $400 to over $1,680 within three months. This dramatic appreciation accelerated notably beginning August 25, following the launch of Grayscale’s spot ZEC ETF, which triggered a near tripling of daily trading volumes.

Following a parallel trajectory, Monero (XMR) rose 17% over seven days amid protocol enhancements and renewed investor interest in privacy-focused digital assets. However, XMR struggled to maintain momentum above $626 on October 20, dropping over 8% to $572 the following day as traders cashed in on earlier gains.

Whales Place Massive Leveraged Bets on ZEC Rally

On-chain intelligence firm Lookonchain reports that two major players initiated 10x leveraged long positions amounting to 29,798 ZEC—valued at roughly $37.57 million—over a span of 15 hours, underscoring growing institutional conviction behind the rally.

Memecoins Surge as BTC and ETH Trade Flat

Beyond privacy coins, memecoins have also seen a resurgence. PEPE gained 9%, while token M surged 14% over a 24-hour period, according to crypto analytics platform Santiment.

Santiment highlighted Monero’s recent network upgrades and upcoming developments in the Zcash ecosystem as catalysts sparking renewed enthusiasm for privacy-centric cryptocurrencies. Additionally, the firm observed that meme coins are experiencing strong speculative activity after enduring extended periods of volatility-driven sell-offs.

Santiment further emphasized that price dynamics were highly segmented, with notable spikes isolated to certain sectors rather than driven by broad market-wide momentum.

Top-tier cryptocurrencies continued trading sideways. Bitcoin slipped 0.8% over the past week and hovers slightly above $83,000, while Ethereum dipped 2.5%, currently exchanging hands near $2,450.

What It Means for Investors

This divergence—sharp rallies in select altcoins contrasted with flat performance from Bitcoin and Ethereum—deviates significantly from traditional bull-run patterns where broader participation typically drives upward trends. For investors, this environment presents both heightened opportunity and elevated risk, particularly given the pronounced volatility inherent in emerging narratives around privacy and community-driven tokens.
