Shanghai has appointed career finance official Zhu Zhongming as the municipal government’s new party chief, a move that places him in contention to become the city’s next mayor.
The appointment was announced Saturday via social media, noting that Zhu had chaired a meeting of the city government’s party leadership group.
Zhu assumes the position previously held by current mayor Gong Zheng. However, Shanghai’s most senior role remains the secretary of the Shanghai Communist Party Committee, currently occupied by Chen Jining.
Zhu’s appointment comes approximately a year before the next Communist Party national congress, which is anticipated to involve a significant leadership transition.
Should Chen be elevated to a senior position in Beijing—following a pattern established over the past two decades—it would create vacancies at the top of Shanghai’s municipal government.
Zhu, 54, is a veteran finance official whose career has largely unfolded in his home province of Zhejiang, where his professional trajectory intersected with that of Premier Li Qiang during Li’s tenure as governor.
He began his career in the provincial finance department in 1993, following his graduation from Wuhan University.
