A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Japan early Sunday, causing strong shaking and injuring dozens, authorities reported.
The quake hit southern Ibaraki Prefecture, near Tokyo, at a depth of about 68 km, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, noting there was no tsunami threat.
Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency said at least 37 people were injured, including one seriously hurt, and one building was damaged in Saitama Prefecture.
In Tokyo, some regional train services were reportedly disrupted.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the tremor was felt across the capital and in Ibaraki, Saitama, and Chiba prefectures, adding that authorities were taking appropriate measures and urging officials to assess damage and provide timely, accurate information.
“I urge residents in areas where shaking was strongest to stay alert for the possibility of another similar quake,” Takaichi added.
