Miley Cyrus unveiled a cryptic trailer on Tuesday for her upcoming tenth album, Bass Persuades. The promotional clip displays only her first name, signaling a new chapter without her surname.
Cyrus has updated her social media accounts to reflect the change. An Instagram post features her portrait with a white rose in her mouth and a caption about music’s power, signed simply “Miley.”
Fans have wondered about the significance of the rebrand, but Billy Ray Cyrus says it is merely the natural progression of his daughter’s iconic status.
Billy Ray shared a heartfelt Instagram post, noting that he has always called her Miley and recalling his own early career when he performed as “Cyrus” before his 1992 hit “Achy Breaky Heart.” He also referenced his tribute merchandise bearing the name “CYRUS SOME GAVE ALL” and a POW/MIA flag.
He confirmed discussing the change with Miley, feeling it was right, and likened it to other legendary mononymous artists such as Dolly Parton, Cher, Elvis Presley, and Prince. “It’s a natural progression for an iconic superstar legend,” he said, adding, “And the legend continues! Looking forward to the new album.”
The album is scheduled for release on September 18 and will consist of ten tracks. Her label described the project as a new chapter in which Miley (without a surname) pays tribute to her godmother, Dolly Parton. It will be followed by her first full U.S. concerts since 2021, with two nights headlining the Hollywood Bowl on October 16 and 18.
After Dolly Parton’s death on August 25 at age 80, Cyrus honored her godmother in a tribute, recalling a recent conversation about music and transformation. “What I KNOW is Dolly would want me to feel it, write a song about it, and then continue on and be strong,” she wrote, adding that Parton remains an angel guiding her.
