Harvey Weinstein, central to the abuse allegations that ignited the #MeToo movement in Hollywood, was resentenced on Wednesday to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting former TV production assistant Miriam Haley.
In 2020 he received a 23‑year sentence for the same assault, but that conviction was overturned on appeal in 2024. A New York jury found him guilty again in 2025 following a retrial.
Haley testified about the assault during both trials and spoke once more in court on Wednesday, just before the sentencing.
“Being sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein has devastated my life and my sense of security—an impact that may never fade,” Haley said. “Choosing to speak out means I will likely look over my shoulder for years to come. It feels like a life sentence for me.”
She added, “Pursuing accountability has retraumatized me; everything stems from his actions. I have contemplated abandoning this fight many times.”
Abusive behaviour
Currently incarcerated in New York, Weinstein once wielded such influence in Hollywood that he could make or break careers and projects.
Investigations by The New Yorker and The New York Times uncovered a pattern of abusive behavior, triggering a wave of accusations from more than 80 individuals.
Weinstein also faces a resentencing in California for the 2013 rape and assault of an actress in a Los Angeles hotel room; an appellate court in June upheld the conviction but vacated his original 16‑year term.
In May, a New York judge declared a mistrial in a separate case after jurors could not agree on whether Weinstein sexually assaulted actress Jessica Mann.
This marked Mann’s third appearance on the stand against Weinstein; a 2020 guilty verdict was overturned due to witness mishandling, and a 2025 proceeding ended in mistrial after a juror dispute. Prosecutors later announced they would not pursue a fourth trial.
Weinstein, who uses a wheelchair because of health problems, continues to deny all allegations.
His downfall began when the initial accusations surfaced, toppling him from his prominent place in the entertainment industry.
