Harvey Weinstein, the once‑prominent Hollywood producer, was handed a 15‑year prison sentence after a jury convicted him last year of a criminal sexual assault against a former assistant.
During a victim impact statement, Miriam Haley, Weinstein’s accuser, described the assault as having a ‘devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away.’
Weinstein, who appeared in court from a wheelchair, denied the accusations while apologizing to ‘anyone I may have hurt by my actions.’
Weinstein has already served six years behind bars as his legal battles unfolded and holds a separate conviction for sex crimes in Los Angeles. He has faced three New York trials on rape and abuse charges.
His initial conviction and sentencing in the Miriam Haley case date to 2020. In 2024, New York’s highest court overturned that conviction, finding Weinstein had not received a fair trial. He was subsequently retried and convicted again for the assault on Haley the following year.
The 2020 trial included testimony from three women: Miriam Haley, actress Jessica Mann, and model Kaja Sokola.
Haley testified that Weinstein assaulted her in a Manhattan apartment in 2006, leading the jury to find him guilty on that charge.
“I just thought, I have to stand up for myself. I have to stand up for the truth,” she told the BBC about her decision to testify.
