Christian Eriksen has departed Wolfsburg by mutual agreement, more than three months after his collapse during Denmark’s friendly match against Ukraine.
The former Manchester United midfielder’s contract with the German second-tier club was set to run until June 2027.
Eriksen, 34, had previously experienced a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 group match against Finland in Copenhagen in 2021.
“At this time, staying close to my family in Denmark is my priority, and I’m glad we found a mutually agreeable solution,” Eriksen said.
“My tenure at Wolfsburg featured both highs and lows. I know the club is in capable hands as it strives to return to the Bundesliga, and I’m convinced a successful future lies ahead.”
Eriksen, who has been sidelined since June, signed with Wolfsburg as a free agent a year ago after leaving Manchester United and made 34 appearances for the club.
The 151-cap Danish international has previously represented Ajax, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan and Brentford.
In a statement, Wolfsburg’s sporting director Dieter Hecking said: “The decision about his future rested solely with Christian.”
“We wanted to grant him the freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract.”
“Despite his brief spell here, he has left a lasting impression on his teammates, our staff and the fans.”
