Muslim World League Presents ‘AI for All’ Initiative at UN Week in New York

The Muslim World League organized a conference titled ‘AI for All: Faith, Human Dignity and Artificial Intelligence’ in New York on Thursday, with support from the United Nations, during the high‑level week of the UN General Assembly.

Attendees included MWL Secretary‑General and chairman of the Association of Muslim Scholars, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al‑Issa; UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel Moratinos; and the Secretary‑General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed. The gathering also featured religious leaders researching AI ethics, representatives from major U.S. AI firms, the World Bank, leading American universities, and prominent candidates for the UN secretary‑general position.

A central theme was the necessity of inclusive international participation in AI ethics, incorporating religious and civilizational perspectives and shared ethical principles.

The conference examined AI‑generated content that fuels hatred, violence, and civilizational conflict driven by ideological, religious, or other intellectual motives.

The meeting concluded with a recommendation that the UN Alliance of Civilizations develop a “Code of Ethics for AI” and create a committee, led by the Alliance, to oversee its implementation. The committee would comprise diverse religious leaders, intellectuals, educators, legislators, and technology company representatives, aiming to forge a common international framework for AI ethics grounded in civilizational cooperation.

Moratinos affirmed that the Alliance of Civilizations is prepared to undertake this initiative.

Al‑Issa announced that the Muslim World League will establish an AI laboratory in partnership with technology companies to develop programs benefiting religious, educational, and humanitarian institutions. He also stated that the League will digitize selected Islamic and Arabic texts and sources, making them accessible to AI companies while respecting intellectual property rights. Additionally, a dedicated unit will monitor and correct translation errors in these materials, with findings shared widely, as many translation inaccuracies have led to misinterpretations of Islamic teachings.
