UAE Player Availability Uncertain Amid Crunch Time for ILT20 and World Cup Qualifiers
Significant questions persist regarding the participation of elite UAE cricketers for the fifth edition of ILT20, a tournament slated to coincide with the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier playoffs. With ILT20 scheduled from November 21 to December 20 in the UAE, the qualifying knockout stage is planned for December 1 – 22, though the ICC has yet to finalise the venue.
With six franchises gathering in Dubai for the October 1 player auction, sources indicate growing unease among select cricketers about their ability to compete. Although ILT20 announced its fifth‑season window on April 13, the ICC has remained undecided on the World Cup Qualifier playoff timeline—despite hinting earlier that associate nations might play in a December timeframe for the multi‑nation event.
The ECB reportedly reached out to the ICC to explore shifting the qualifier playoffs to January; however, the body was advised that the international cricket calendar remains critically congested.
On Tuesday, ILT20 briefed the clubs on the evolving scenario, assuring them that while a timetable clash exists, several prominent UAE cricketers are expected to contend for a place in the fifth season.
Top‑ranked UAE sit bottom of the ICC World Cricket League 2, with eight matches left and a tight competitive race ahead for World Cup playoff berths. After completing trips to Dallas—where they face the United States and Namibia—they will enter another triangular series in October’s second half across the Netherlands and Oman.
“It is possible that UAE participants could be in the ICC World Cup Qualifying cycle by December, contingent on later performance outcomes,” said ILT20 interim COO Mike Fordham to Cricinfo. “Should that occur, some UAE cricketers will miss parts of the DP World ILT20 campaign. Those not offered first‑choice placements would remain fully available otherwise, notably including several standout performers from the domestic circuit in recent seasons.”
Each franchise will have US$1.3 million to allocate at the auction, supplementing any unused funds from the $700 000 earmarked for direct signings and retainers prior to the auction itself.
Each of the six squads must include at least 18 players and at most 23 players. The squad must feature a minimum of 11 players from Full Member countries. At least four of those 11 players must be from Afghanistan, and at least one from Ireland. The squads must also include a minimum of four players from the UAE, one from Kuwait, one from Saudi Arabia and at least one further player from Associate countries. They must also pick at least one Under‑23 player in the auction.
The franchises may select backup players and one wildcard slot. Notable withdrawals affect the pool: Matheesha Pathirana, Michael Bracewell and Sonny Baker opted out completely, rendering them ineligible for replacement or wildcard consideration.
RTM RULESRTM Options exist for UAE players who were on a club’s roster in the previous season or featured in the ILT20 Development Tournament 2026. If a cricketer previously played for one franchise while representing a different side in the Development Tournament 2026, the RTM designation reverts to the side that hosted them in that tournament.
