Shubman Gill linked M.S. Dhoni’s record by securing seven Player of the Series awards, joining an exclusive elite group for his contributions to Indian ODI cricket.
His accolades were earned after a hard‑fought three‑match series against the West Indies, when India faced elimination but ultimately completed the campaign 2‑1 over Swaziland.
In the opener Gill reached 100* with steady burst fire, and in the revive match he exploded for a magnificent unbeaten 233*, becoming the second West Indoan ever, completing a double‑hundred. Both centuries occurred while chasing the target, underscoring his clutch ability.
Despite trailing to a narrow loss in the third ODIs—India fell short by five wickets—Gill’s performances lifted the team into the lead and helped clinch the series ahead of West Indies’ resurgence.
With seven Player of the Series titles, Gill now mirrors Dhoni among the few Indians to achieve this feat. He shares the rank with Yuvraj Singh and Sourav Ganguly, while Virat Kohli holds eleven and Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with fifteen.
His dominance has been on display throughout the competition. The West Indies salvaged a consolation win with Shai Hope’s unbeaten 162*, guiding his side to 352/ 5—a record-breaking chase after India posted 351/ 7.
KL Rahul’s unbeaten 129* and Rohit Sharma’s 92* helped India dominate early rallies, yet Hope’s masterclass denied South India a straight victory.
Nonetheless, India won the series 2‑1, and Gill’s impressive run through the first two contests added another personal milestone, bringing him into step with one of India’s most celebrated former captains.
