Tourist traffic in Greece followed an upward trajectory in August 2026, with arrivals and overnight stays across hotels, campsites, and rented rooms increasing compared to the same month in 2025.
However, beneath the overall positive figures, significant disparities emerge between domestic and international visitors, as well as among accommodation types.
According to provisional data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), total arrivals reached 7,429,931, a 2.6% increase, while overnight stays amounted to 34,685,695, up 2.1%. The growth in arrivals exceeded the rise in overnight stays by 0.5 percentage points.
Foreign Visitors Fuel Growth
International tourists were the primary driver, accounting for 76.7% of arrivals and 84% of overnight stays. Greek residents represented 23.3% of arrivals and 16% of overnight stays.
The divide is especially pronounced in overnight stays, where the share of foreign visitors exceeded that of Greeks by 68 percentage points, underscoring the stronger contribution of international demand to the accommodation sector.
Year-over-year, foreign arrivals rose 2.9% versus 1.7% for Greek residents—a 1.2 percentage-point gap. Similarly, overnight stays by foreigners increased 2.3% compared to 1.2% for Greeks, widening the difference to 1.1 percentage points.
Rented Rooms Outpace Hotels and Campsites
The sharpest growth occurred in collective short-stay accommodation—rented rooms—where arrivals climbed 5.2%, outpacing the 1.5% rise in hotels and campsites by 3.7 percentage points.
The gap was even wider for overnight stays: rented rooms saw a 4.6% increase versus just 1.1% for hotels and campsites, a difference of 3.5 percentage points. Short-stay accommodation thus expanded at a significantly faster rate.
Visitor Breakdown by Accommodation Type
In hotels and campsites, foreign arrivals grew 1.9% against a 0.5% rise for Greek residents, a 1.4 percentage-point spread. Overnight stays rose 1.2% for foreigners and 0.8% for Greeks, narrowing the gap to 0.4 points.
In rented rooms, growth was markedly higher across the board. Foreign arrivals increased 5.5% versus 4.2% for Greeks, while overnight stays rose 5.1% and 2.2%, respectively. Consequently, the gap between foreign and domestic visitors reached 1.3 percentage points for arrivals and 2.9 points for overnight stays.
Foreign Tourists Stay Longer
The average length of stay in August held steady at 4.7 days, unchanged from August 2025. Yet the contrast between visitor categories remains notable.
Foreign tourists stayed an average of 5.1 days, while Greek residents averaged 3.2 days—a 1.9-day gap, meaning international visitors stayed roughly 59% longer.
This pattern persists across both accommodation categories: in hotels and campsites, foreigners averaged 5.1 days versus 3.2 days for Greeks; in rented rooms, the figures were 5.2 and 3.3 days, respectively.
ELSTAT’s August 2026 data confirms rising tourist traffic, propelled by faster growth in rented rooms and a stronger contribution from foreign visitors. Meanwhile, arrival growth outpaced overnight stays, while the average length of stay remained stable.
