Novak Djokovic, the 39-year-old world No. 3 and title favorite, was stunned by 19-year-old Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca in a marathon third-round clash at Roland Garros.
Djokovic dominated the early exchanges, opening the match with a 5-1 lead in the first set. But Fonseca, fueled by youthful energy and impeccable fitness, seized momentum, battling to 5-4 before Djokovic closed out the set. The second set followed a similar trajectory, with Djokovic edging to 6-4 through relentless baseline exchanges.
Fonseca’s breakthrough came in the third set, where he showcased audacious groundstrokes to capture the session: 6-3. The Brazilian then broke serve to lead 2-0 in the fourth set after recovering from a precarious 30-0 deficit, only to lose the point after missing two break-point opportunities at 4-4.
Resilient to the end, Djokovic retook control by claiming the fifth set 7-5, but Fonseca retaliated brilliantly in the sixth, converting break points to seize the set 7-5. The match concluded with an unthinkable scoreline: 4-6 4-6 6-3 7-5 7-5 — a Herculean comeback by the teenager against one of ATP’s fiercest competitors.
