Tammy ‘Sunny’ Sytch, a WWE Hall of Famer, is currently incarcerated with a sentence extending through December 2038 as she pursues efforts to overturn her conviction.
Sytch was convicted in 2023 for her role in the death of Julian LaFrancis Lasseter, 75, who was killed in a traffic accident in Florida in March 2022. Following a no-contest plea, she received a sentence of over 17 years after being found guilty of DUI manslaughter and causing injury/death while driving without a license.
According to PWInsider, Sytch filed a motion this month seeking to vacate the conviction. She argues her legal counsel was ineffective, failing to adequately investigate contributing factors to Lasseter’s death, including his medical history which reportedly features coronary artery disease, stenosis, and other serious cardiovascular conditions. Additionally, the motion cites toxicology results showing Lasseter had Adderall and Cialis in his system.
Sytch further claims her defense team was negligent for not probing a conflict of interest: an assistant state attorney involved in the prosecution was married to the physician who certified Lasseter’s death.
Legal experts note that claims of ineffective counsel are difficult to substantiate, requiring defendants to demonstrate that their attorney’s performance was incompetent or erroneous enough to materially alter the case outcome, rather than merely unsuccessful.
The motion requests that Sytch be granted a new trial or receive other post-conviction relief.
Initial motion denied —
However, the judge summarily denied the motion for failing to meet the necessary criteria. Sytch may now file an appeal of that decision or abandon her challenge. The ruling cautioned that if the conviction were ultimately re-examined, her original plea would no longer apply, potentially resulting in a sentence exceeding the original 17 years.
