John Cena has announced a new tournament set to introduce an additional championship to WWE. The inaugural John Cena Classic is scheduled for December 14 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The competition will feature main-roster Superstars and emerging NXT talent. However, the announcement has already drawn significant criticism from within the wrestling community.
Former WWE Superstar Stevie Richards voiced strong reservations about the presentation, questioning the tournament’s purpose, the championship’s design, and WWE’s decision to schedule back-to-back RAW episodes. Speaking on his podcast, Richards argued that the timing only serves to fragment audience attention, particularly given the scheduling conflict with Monday Night RAW.
Richards also took aim at the championship’s appearance, suggesting it lacks the distinct identity expected of a billion-dollar enterprise. He criticized the design as resembling a generic replica, stating that a company of WWE’s stature should deliver a title with a unique visual identity rather than what felt like an afterthought.
Crowd Reaction and Booking Concerns
The live audience response added further scrutiny. Richards noted that the segment’s most intense boos were reserved for the Club WWE concept, with Cena appearing visibly surprised by the reaction. The crowd’s subdued response to the announcement highlighted a broader disconnect between the presentation and fan engagement.
Richards further pointed out that WWE continued promoting match developments that the live audience could not immediately experience, particularly fans at the Perth, Australia RAW event. He questioned the logic of building storylines that are inaccessible to the very audience in attendance, calling the practice confusing and counterproductive.
Additionally, Richards criticized the lack of clarity surrounding the tournament details, noting that as of the recording date, very little was officially known about the format or stakes, despite the event being promoted as a major addition to the WWE calendar.
These elements combined to create an announcement that, in Richards’ view, felt more like a marketing tactic than a meaningful championship addition. The overall execution raised questions about WWE’s creative direction and the value placed on its multi-billion-dollar brand.
