Following the Democratic party’s strong performance in the recent US midterm elections, over two dozen Democrats are reportedly considering bids for the 2028 presidential race, according to Jim Messina, who strategized Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.
Messina, the architect of Obama’s 2012 campaign, noted that after significant wins in both congressional and state elections, he has engaged with more than two dozen potential campaigns that are actively preparing for the 2028 cycle by securing funding and assembling teams.
“I think you’re going to start having Democrats announce exploratory committees next week or the next couple of weeks, probably after Thanksgiving,” Messina told the BBC’s Americast podcast.
He mentioned that he is already aware of individuals relocating to support a governor’s presidential campaign.
He also predicted that the number of candidates could decrease as they face the challenge of raising substantial funds necessary for primary contests to secure the party’s nomination.
Messina shared insights into his discussions with candidates, stating: “When I sit down with candidates or their campaigns, I say to them, ‘Tell me your economic vision for the future of this country. What are you going to do on AI?'”
Another key factor is the presence of the outgoing president, Donald Trump, who will remain in office during the campaign season.
“And so, do the Democrats take the bait and talk about Donald Trump every day, or do you stay focused on your message?” he questioned.
“It’s going to be the most interesting presidential election since 2008.”
