Three people were killed and several others injured after a shooting at Seattle’s annual Bite of Seattle food festival near the Space Needle on Sunday, according to the city fire department.
Mayor Katie Wilson said one suspect was apprehended after the shooting at the Seattle Center, the venue for the Bite of Seattle food festival, which was hosting events throughout the weekend when gunfire erupted around 6:00 p.m. local time.
A second suspect remains at large after fleeing the scene, Seattle Police Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis said. He added that investigators believe the gunmen were exchanging fire with one another.
Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and a third later died from injuries at a hospital. Among the injured is a two‑year‑old boy, officials said.
Videos shared online showed people taking shelter inside the city’s iconic Space Needle.
People could be seen crouched on the ground, taking cover behind pillars and shelves of merchandise in the Space Needle’s lobby during the shooting.
The Seattle Police Department said an investigation remains ongoing and urged the public to avoid the area.
Wilson said in a statement that she wanted to “thank the Seattle police officers who responded to the scene and took a suspect into custody.”
She had initially reported two suspects in custody before updating her statement later on Sunday evening.
Four of the injured were taken to hospital in stable condition, while a fifth declined treatment, the fire department said.
