Napoleon Solo Pursues Redemption in the Travers
Named in homage to the iconic spy character from the 1960s television series The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Napoleon Solo was originally acquired for $40,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by trainer Chad Summers, acting on behalf of Al Gold’s Gold Square LLC. Following his victory in the Preakness Stakes (G1), the colt was sold to Espoir USA, Inc., though he remained under Summers’ training.
Upon retiring from racing, Napoleon Solo will stand at stud at Lane’s End Farm. Despite his impressive triumph in last year’s Champagne Stakes (G1) at Aqueduct, his connections chose to bypass the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) in favor of concentrating on his three-year-old season.
His 2026 campaign got off to a challenging start, beginning with a fifth-place finish—beaten by more than 11 lengths—in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park on February 28, followed by another fifth in the Wood Memorial Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct. After sitting out the Kentucky Derby (G1), Napoleon Solo bounced back emphatically to capture the Preakness Stakes by 1¼ lengths under Paco Lopez.
Although he has never competed over Saratoga’s main track, he recorded a string of impressive workouts there last summer prior to his Champagne victory and has continued that pattern this year, including a bullet half-mile in :47.67 last week.
“He worked great up here last year, and he’s had three really good workouts here since the Haskell,” Summers commented. “Now it’s just bubble wrap time.”
Napoleon Solo Race Scenario
Napoleon Solo possesses a high cruising speed and operates as a tactical front-runner and presser, with his natural early pace serving as his primary asset. In every start, he has either dictated the tempo or pressed the leader, remaining within approximately two lengths of the front after the opening quarter-mile.
Summers has consistently highlighted his “natural speed” and “high cruising speed” as the colt’s greatest strengths, noting that Napoleon Solo can sustain fast early fractions that wear down his rivals while still maintaining enough stamina to finish strongly when the race develops in his favor. He is expected to be the pacesetter on Saturday.

Napoleon Solo Wagering Analysis
Napoleon Solo embodies the essence of unpredictable brilliance. When at his best, he is capable of overpowering virtually any opponent. The challenge lies in the uncertainty surrounding which version of him will appear on race day. He is likely to be sharper than in his previous start, which is advantageous given the added furlong, and he will provide outstanding value for those who believe he can topple premier three-year-olds Golden Tempo and Renegade.
He brings proven talent, a favorable post position, and a Hall of Fame jockey into the race. Napoleon Solo is a legitimate win contender and an exceptional anchor for multi-race wagers and exotic bets.
