Three people were killed and over 100 others injured Tuesday following a major fire at a petrochemical facility in Russia’s far eastern Amur region, the plant’s operator confirmed.
The incident occurred at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex, a remote joint venture between Russian energy giant Sibur and China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec). In a statement, the operating company, Amur GKhK, verified the fatalities: two citizens of the People’s Republic of China and one Russian national.
According to the company, 24 individuals were hospitalized with injuries ranging from moderate to severe, while an additional 122 people sustained minor injuries that did not require hospital admission.
“Search and rescue operations are continuing at the site,” Amur GKhK reported, noting that emergency crews are working to extinguish the primary blaze and conduct controlled burning of residual industrial gas.
The operator stated that the complex’s main installations escaped damage, explaining that the fire erupted in an auxiliary technical area of the facility.
