AB de Villiers Points to Leadership Instability and Character Deficit as Pakistan Cricket’s Core Problems

Former South African captain AB de Villiers has pinpointed what he sees as fundamental issues behind Pakistan cricket’s recent difficulties. The 42-year-old argues the side requires greater resilience and determination, backed by a core of senior players who lead through example and mentor the younger squad members.

De Villiers also flagged instability at the helm of Pakistan cricket, noting that frequent leadership and management upheavals have disrupted the team. He voiced hope that Babar Azam, recently restored as captain, secures a prolonged stint and establishes consistency in both his fitness and batting form.

De Villiers Demands Greater Character and Fight from Pakistan

De Villiers emphasised that Test cricket is ultimately a test of character and stated that Pakistan has been deficient in that regard during recent performances. He believes four or five seasoned players must assume responsibility and establish standards for the remainder of the squad. He also criticised a lack of application from Pakistan’s players, particularly their batters, who he felt have conceded too many soft dismissals.

“I have always believed that Test cricket is fundamentally a test of character, and that is perhaps what Pakistan is missing right now: a bit of character, a bit of fight, and an individual leadership group of four or five players who collectively decide, ‘You know what? Let’s be the leaders here and set the example. I don’t often see, especially these days, a lot of Pakistan players willing to put in the extra hard yards individually,” De Villiers said on his YouTube channel.

De Villiers Highlights Administrative Instability in Pakistan Cricket

Beyond player performances, De Villiers pointed to uncertainty surrounding Pakistan cricket’s management and leadership. He noted frequent reshuffles in key positions and backed Babar to receive a longer opportunity following his return as captain.

“There is also definitely some mismanagement from the top, with frequent chopping and changing and constant shifts in leadership. Babar is back now, so hopefully he gets an extended run, stays fit, and starts scoring runs again, as we all know he is capable of,” De Villiers said.

His remarks followed a difficult Test tour of England for Pakistan, where they lost at Headingley and Lord’s by an innings and 103 runs and 194 runs respectively. After those defeats, the Pakistan Cricket Board implemented sweeping squad changes, sending seven players home and bringing in seven replacements, including five uncapped players.

The PCB also removed head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and assistant coach Umar Gul during the tour. De Villiers’ comments underscore the need for Pakistan to achieve greater stability while developing a group of players capable of setting standards for the team across formats.
