Germany’s far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) is celebrating after exit polls projected the party would secure over 44% of the vote in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt.
The AfD’s projected performance exceeded expectations from earlier opinion polls, with party officials describing the anticipated result as a “historic outcome.”
Nevertheless, party leaders emphasized that final confirmation of their ability to form a government will depend on the electoral performance of smaller parties competing for seats in the state parliament.
Critical to the final outcome is whether any of these smaller parties surpass the 5% threshold required for parliamentary representation.
Berlin correspondent Jess Parker reported from the AfD’s headquarters, where supporters gathered to celebrate the projected results.
