The gold-medal decider between India and Pakistan at the 2026 Asian Games delivered significant on-field drama, though a specific interaction between Saim Ayub and Vaibhav Suryavanshi drew widespread criticism. Pakistan all-rounder Ayub’s dismissal celebration targeting the 15-year-old Indian opener sparked debate, drawing disappointment from former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Kamran Akmal.
Ayub Celebrates Dismissal of Suryavanshi with Age-Related Gesture
The incident took place in the third over of the final. Suryavanshi, who opened for India, had scored 15 runs off nine balls, including two boundaries over the rope, before Ayub dismissed him.
Rather than opting for a standard celebration, Ayub mimed rocking a baby in a cradle, which was immediately read as a dig at the youngster’s age. The gesture rapidly became a focal point for cricket commentators and fans alike.
Online reaction turned critical, underscored by the fact that Suryavanshi was representing his nation at the highest level at just 15 years of age. The teenager had already generated significant buzz during the tournament as part of an Indian squad determined to defeat their historic rivals.
Akmal Criticizes Distraction from Performance
Akmal questioned the prioritization of such antics, insisting that Pakistani players should let their cricket speak for itself. Appearing on a sports discussion show, the former wicketkeeper emphasized that opponents deserve respect irrespective of their age or skill level.
“These incidents have persisted for a long time. Our performances have not been up to mark, yet we engage in these displays for social media,” Akmal said.
He also stressed that Suryavanshi’s age should not alter his treatment once he steps onto the international stage.
“The management needs to reflect on this. This is international cricket. Whether he is 13, 14, or 15, he is representing his country at that level. Saim Ayub is not a boy himself; he needs to concentrate on his game,” Akmal added.
India Secure Gold Following Victory Over Pakistan
Ayub’s celebration was met with an immediate rebuttal from the Indian batting lineup. In the same over, Abhishek Sharma launched an attack against the Pakistan all-rounder, hitting a six and two fours to shift the momentum back onto the bowler.
Abhishek went on to deliver one of the match’s finest knocks, racing to 61 off 28 balls. Tilak Varma contributed a quick-fire 51 from 22 deliveries, helping India reach 211/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Pakistan fought back strongly in their chase, led by Hasan Nawaz’s impressive 96 off 51 balls, but India remained composed, limiting them to 192/6. The 19-run win secured the gold medal for India.
