Alex Cora Firing: Analyst Reveals Concerns Over Management Style originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
On September 1, 2026, the Boston Red Sox unexpectedly terminated Alex Cora and several of his assistant coaches less than a month into the season.
While Cora remained under contract through 2027, persistent tensions had developed due to the team’s inconsistent performance since the 2021 ALCS victory.
During a radio interview on “The Greg Hill Show,” NESN analyst Lou Merloni speculated that Cora’s dismissal stemmed from mismatched priorities.
“My take is that it came to a crossroads,” Merloni said. “I believe Cora prefers managing veteran players rather than building around young talent. This preference had been evident for years—demanding specific roster additions at the offseason and trade deadline without success.”
When Cora joined in 2018, he led a star-studded, veteran-laden roster that easily won the championship. However, the subsequent roster overhaul—replacing stars with younger athletes—created friction, as Cora repeatedly sought veteran reinforcements that management declined to provide.
The Red Sox’ three consecutive non-playoff seasons (2022–2024) coincided with Cora’s frustration over the team’s youth-centric approach.
“The last four years have been essentially a young team,” Merloni noted. “From the 2021 ALCS run to recent attempts to develop young players, the strategy hasn’t delivered consistency.”
The team’s post-firing struggles reflect broader systemic issues rather than Cora’s leadership alone.
