American Troops Death in Iraq Linked to Disposal of Downed Iranian Drone

The death brings the number of US soldiers killed since the start of the US-Israel war on Iran to 17.

The United States military has confirmed the death of a service member in northern Iraq, stating that the soldier was fatally wounded during the controlled destruction of unexploded munitions from a shot-down Iranian drone.

In a statement released on Sunday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that the incident occurred on July 18, and that a second soldier sustained minor injuries in the detonation.

The name of the deceased has not been disclosed.

The fatal event on Saturday raised the total number of US personnel killed since the onset of the US and Israeli military campaign against Iran to 17. The conflict commenced on February 28.

Two additional US troops were killed in Iranian strikes in Jordan on Friday, and a third remains unaccounted for. CENTCOM announced on Sunday that unidentified remains had been recovered at the site and that forensic identification was in progress.

The announcement coincided with a US offensive against Iran for the eighth straight night, prompting Tehran to launch missiles and drones at American installations in the Gulf in response.

Hostilities have escalated in recent days after the collapse of a temporary ceasefire reached a month earlier, with competition over the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz intensifying.

The fighting has resulted in thousands of deaths, predominantly in Iran and Lebanon, and has severely disrupted energy markets while raising concerns about worldwide inflation.

Since the conflict began, Iran has fired hundreds of low-cost, high-explosive one-way attack drones—referred to as “Shaheds”—at targets throughout the Gulf region.

Open-source assessments indicate that each Shahed drone can be manufactured for roughly $30,000, allowing Iran to conduct mass attacks at relatively low expense. By contrast, the interceptors used to defend against them may cost millions per unit and are not always successful.

On Sunday, Iranian media reported US strikes near the southern city of Sirik and the town of Shadegan, close to the Iraqi border. A subsequent explosion was documented in Abadan, in southwestern Iran.

Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization denounced a US strike on the construction site of a nuclear power plant at Darkhovin, according to the Mehr news agency. The International Atomic Energy Agency stated it was reviewing reports of the overnight attack, confirming the facility was in its initial construction phase.

In retaliation for the recent strikes, Iranian state television reported drone assaults on US military assets at Kuwait’s Al-Adiri camp and Ali Al Salem airbase.

The Kuwaiti government said a desalination plant was struck for the second consecutive day, igniting a fire, which it described as a direct hit on essential civilian infrastructure.

Bahraini state television reported that the country’s air defenses intercepted an Iranian attack on Sunday, while warning sirens activated in Jordan, where the military said it destroyed three Iranian missiles. Jordan has summoned Iran’s chargé d’affaires to protest the recent bombardments.
