Anton Stach required until the 88th minute to net the decisive goal that secured Leeds United’s victory in their Premier League opener, but the underlying quality of Daniel Farke’s squad was evident long before that. A palpable optimism surrounds Elland Road, suggesting that Leeds might be on the verge of a highly successful 2026/27 campaign.
Following their promotion from the Championship, the Elland Road club spent last season solidifying its standing in the top flight. The ambition for the current season is to climb the league standings, and Saturday’s away triumph against Nottingham Forest indicates that Farke’s team could legitimately compete for a European spot.

“We know our targets and goals,” Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu stated following the 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. “We want to be a Premier League club next season. We want to achieve that target and then get to a better place. Once that can be achieved, we think of everything else.”
During the summer transfer window, Leeds invested nearly €100 million in new talent. James Trafford was brought in from Manchester City to serve as Farke’s primary goalkeeper, and the English international has quickly acclimatized to his new environment, offering a significant upgrade over the team’s previous goalkeeping options.
The acquisition of Harry Wilson on a free transfer following his departure from Fulham proved to be a major coup for the club. The Welsh international registered 17 goal contributions for Fulham in the Premier League last season and has immediately enhanced his new team’s attacking and creative capabilities.

Tarik Muharemovic represented another significant signing, with the Bosnian defender arriving from Sassuolo for approximately €40 million. Muharemovic started on the left side of Leeds’ back three against Nottingham Forest, excelling at keeping the opposition at bay throughout the match.
Furthermore, Leeds recently finalized the acquisition of Nico Elvedi following a World Cup where the 29-year-old impressed for Switzerland. While it remains uncertain exactly how Elvedi will integrate into Farke’s tactical setup, his caliber and experience will undoubtedly strengthen the Leeds United squad throughout the season.
Securing European qualification may still be a tall order for Leeds, given that the club lacks the financial muscle of some of its Premier League rivals. Nevertheless, Farke and his squad have constructed a solid foundation to build upon. The opening weekend victory has certainly sparked a debate regarding what the Elland Road outfit can realistically achieve this season.
