Austria were given a scare by FIFA World Cup 2026 debutants Jordan, before securing a win, which was rounded off by a penalty in stoppage time by veteran forward Marko Arnautovic.

Austria returned to the World Cup after a 28‑year absence, edging past Jordan 3‑1 in a tightly contested Group J opener. The victory was secured by an own goal early in the second half and a dramatic late penalty by Marko Arnautovic.
Austria struck first in the 20th minute when Romano Schmid’s powerful strike opened the scoring, only for Jordan to equalise five minutes after the break through Ali Olwan’s precise finish into the far post.
Although Arnautovic’s close‑range effort in the 69th minute appeared to put Austria ahead, it was disallowed for handball after a VAR review involving teammate Stefan Posch.
Seven minutes later, substitute Yazan Al‑Arab turned a Marcel Sabitzer corner into his own net, and Arnautovic ultimately sealed the result with a stoppage‑time penalty following a handball by Saleem Obeid.
With the win, Austria moved up to second in Group J behind reigning champions Argentina, who topped the group after Lionel Messi’s hat‑trick secured a 3‑0 victory over Algeria earlier that day. Jordan sit third, while Algeria remain bottom.
