Ayub’s Explosive 58-Ball Century Powers Kingsmen Past Patriots in Tense Finish

The Patriots, languishing at the bottom of the standings, found themselves in deep trouble at 42 for three inside the powerplay. At that stage, a comfortable victory appeared inevitable for the Kingsmen. However, Fletcher began to accelerate, and despite Mikyle Louis becoming the fourth wicket to fall in the 11th over with the score on 64, the Patriots’ innings gained momentum.

Fletcher added 48 runs in 29 balls alongside Holder, and after Fletcher departed for 55 off 38 balls to Ayub, who was now contributing with the ball, Holder and Shanaka forged a rapid 38-run partnership in just 21 deliveries. Once Holder was dismissed, requiring 33 runs from the final eight balls, the task became nearly impossible. Yet Shanaka refused to go quietly, blasting 19 runs in seven balls to finish unbeaten on 35 from 18 deliveries, though it fell well short of delivering the Patriots’ second win of the season.

The sluggish start to the chase proved decisive, as Johnson Charles, Kevin Wickham, and Louis collectively consumed 34 balls for a meagre 24 runs, a partnership failure that ultimately cost the Patriots a contest they were well-positioned to win.

Instead, the Kingsmen reclaimed the two points, a result built almost entirely on Ayub’s commanding performance with the bat.

Naseem Shah had struck early, removing Keacy Carty off the first ball before dismissing Maaz Sadaqat in his next over, the third of the innings. Kirk McKenzie and Usman Khan offered little resistance at numbers four and five, yet the Kingsmen still managed 42 runs during the powerplay, matching what the Patriots would later achieve.

Ayub truly found his rhythm after the powerplay, reaching 37 off 25 balls by the time Rovman Powell joined him in the middle. The innings then transformed dramatically, as Powell and Ayub launched a blistering 72-run partnership in just 43 balls. Powell contributed a 17-ball 21 at a strike rate of 123.52, but it was Ayub who dominated the stand, smashing 51 runs from just 26 deliveries.

Keemo Paul provided valuable support as Ayub brought up his century in only 57 balls, the second hundred of CPL 2026 following Tim Seifert’s 61-ball 105 not out in the previous match. Paul finished unbeaten on 25 from 13 balls, guiding the Kingsmen to a competitive total. The victory lifted them to fourth place in the standings, while the Patriots remained rooted to the bottom of the table.
