B.C. Lions Turn to Chase Brice as Nathan Rourke Sidelined by Shoulder Injury

Chase Brice, long accustomed to his role as a reliable understudy, is prepared to step into the spotlight as the primary playmaker this Saturday.

The B.C. Lions’ backup quarterback will take over the starting duties this Saturday while Nathan Rourke recovers from a left-shoulder injury. The reigning Most Outstanding Player was sacked on only the second play of the game during Friday’s 19-17 loss to the Edmonton Elks, a defeat that leaves the Lions with a 1-4 record.

Speculation suggests Rourke may be dealing with an AC-joint injury—damage to the ligaments connecting the collarbone to the shoulder blade—which could potentially sideline him for two to three weeks. While the Lions have not officially confirmed the specific diagnosis or a return timeline, General Manager Ryan Rigmaiden offered some optimism regarding the recovery process.

“The good news is nothing surgical is required; it’s now a matter of how quickly he can heal,” Rigmaiden noted. “He’s the type of player who is always eager to get back on the field, so we have to manage his progress carefully.”

The situation places significant pressure on Brice, who struggled against a relentless pass rush on Friday. His performance included an interception on his very first pass attempt, and he faced challenges with mobility and accuracy, finishing the game with 236 yards, one touchdown, and 20 completions on 34 attempts.

Brice, 28, has spent the last two seasons primarily in a backup capacity, dressing for 36 consecutive regular-season games. The 6-foot-2, 236-pound native of Grayson, Georgia, has seen action in six games, including a 2024 performance against the Toronto Argonauts where he threw his first career touchdown.

As the Lions return to B.C. Place this Saturday to face the 2-4 Argonauts, Brice will need to sharpen his decision-making to avoid costly errors.

“I’m working through the kinks and things I can improve upon,” Brice admitted. “I can get the ball out quickly, but I have to respond to the adversity. Friday was a major learning experience regarding trusting my eyes. I’m very comfortable with this offense and want to let our playmakers make plays.”

The matchup presents a unique opportunity; the Argonauts have struggled defensively, allowing the second-most passing yards per game (348.8) and the third-most points (34.5), though they have been effective at stopping the run.

Head coach Buck Pierce emphasized the need for stability. “We are looking for decisive command of the offense,” Pierce said. “You have to understand your players’ strengths and put them in positions to succeed. We need to stay consistent with the offense, even when mistakes happen. Our goal is to control the line of scrimmage and play with physicality.”

Brice has experience performing under pressure. During his time at Clemson in 2018, he stepped in for an injured Trevor Lawrence and led a 94-yard, 12-play drive to secure a 27-23 victory over Syracuse, keeping the Tigers’ national championship hopes alive.

Lions Bolster Depth with Signing of Tyrie Adams

To support the quarterback room, the Lions have added depth. While 23-year-old Kaidon Salter will serve as the primary backup, the team also added 29-year-old Tyrie Adams to the roster on Tuesday. Adams brings experience from four seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks.

Adams previously served as a third-string option, including a 2022 season where he dressed for six games. In 2023, he showed his capability by completing seven of 13 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown in a win against the Elks before a season-ending ACL injury.

“I’ll be ready to step in whenever necessary,” Adams said. “This offense utilizes a lot of RPOs, which fits my skill set well.”

Return to B.C. Place

After spending several weeks away from their home stadium due to World Cup scheduling and recent road games in Langford and Kelowna, the Lions are eager to reclaim their home turf.

“It will be great to be back,” Brice said. “We’ve been on the road for nine weeks, including two bye weeks, so I’m excited to play in front of our fans again.”

Coach Pierce echoed that sentiment: “We are absolutely excited to be back in that building. We love our crowd and that stadium.”
