Authorities report ten fatalities following a plane crash on Andros Island, the Bahamas’ largest island, on Friday.
Nine passengers and the pilot departed Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau at approximately 12:30 p.m., per flight records and official statements.
Around 2 p.m., police in Nicholls Town on Andros received notifications of the crash near San Andros Airport, relayed by Royal Bahamas Police Commissioner Shanta Emily Knowles.
One survivor with severe injuries was found at the scene but later succumbed to their wounds, confirmed by Ms. Knowles.
The identities of the victims remain undisclosed at this time.
A preliminary investigation by the Bahamas Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority indicates the Cessna 402 operated by Flamingo Air experienced mechanical issues prior to crashing into nearby vegetation.
Flamingo Air, which conducts regional flights in the Bahamas and Caribbean, has had all its operations temporarily suspended as a precautionary safety measure, per a government statement.
The ministry emphasized the suspension is not punitive but aimed at ensuring aviation safety.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force, alongside other agencies, is actively investigating the incident.
