The death toll from a fire that swept through a Bangkok music venue has risen to 30, with the city governor pledging tighter inspections while police examine possible negligence and safety shortcomings.
On Tuesday, Thai officials confirmed that 24 victims remain in critical care, while dozens of others who received treatment have been released.
Firefighters required roughly thirty minutes to contain the blaze at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, bringing the fire under control late Sunday.
Investigators are assessing whether the bar’s management adhered to required safety regulations.
“We have established a committee to determine the facts, identify needed improvements, and consider rule changes,” said Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt at a Tuesday news conference.
He added that authorities will conduct more random inspections.
Officials suggest that an electrical short circuit in a ceiling‑mounted air conditioner may have ignited the fire at the pub, which had undergone a safety inspection in April.
Royal Thai Police Chief Kittharath Punpetch noted that the single‑story venue featured four exits, though investigators are checking whether the two rear exits were obstructed or unusable.
One exit close to the restrooms—where most victims were located—was blocked by a table, and a second exit near the kitchen displayed a damaged sign and a sliding door lacking a handle, according to Punpetch.
Authorities are also examining whether gas canisters were kept in the kitchen and if they may have contributed to the fire, Punpetch added.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul recounted that a musician performing at the venue reported seeing smoke emanate from a circuit breaker near the stage before the power failed, followed by an explosion and rapid filling of the bar with thick smoke.
Fire safety professor Lee Young Ju of South Korea’s Kyungil University suggested the blaze could have originated from an electrical fault—perhaps linked to audio or lighting equipment or defective wiring—causing a fire that rapidly spread across the ceiling.
On Tuesday, former patrons and mourners gathered at the site to lay flowers and leave condolence messages on the guardrails surrounding the bar.
