Kobbie Mainoo’s presence at this World Cup has been notably peripheral. Among the outfield players, only he and two others—Ivan Toney and Trevoh Chalobah—have failed to see any action in the tournament.
While Chalobah accepted his role as backup defender following Tino Livramento’s injury, and Toney understood his position as a ‘finisher’ behind Harry Kane, Mainoo’s exclusion carries a different weight.
The Manchester United midfielder, who started England’s Euro 2024 final at just 18, appeared to have a promising international trajectory ahead. Yet he has not played a single minute in the USA and Mexico this summer—a puzzling decision given the circumstances.
This absence becomes more striking when considering Jordan Henderson’s tournament-ending wrist injury during post-Mexico celebrations, and the midfield alternatives Tuchel has preferred. Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson have established themselves as the clear first-choice pairing, with Anderson particularly impressive since his mid-tournament Manchester City transfer.
Rice’s recent fitness concerns—including a bout with illness that limited him to 45 minutes against Norway—created opportunities that Mainoo might reasonably have expected to capitalize on. Instead, Tuchel opted for positional adjustments rather than introducing the young midfielder.
Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers and Arsenal’s Eberechi Eze were selected ahead of Mainoo, with Reece James deployed in midfield despite carrying a hamstring injury. While these tactical decisions may prove sound given England’s progression to the semi-finals against Argentina, they represent a missed opportunity for the emerging talent.
The situation underscores the ruthless nature of elite tournament football, where individual merit sometimes yields to collective strategy in pursuit of ultimate success.
