Bayeux Tapestry Exhibition to Provide Audio-Described Tour for Visually Impaired Visitors

Osman, who is blind in both eyes, contacted the museum through his solicitor Leigh Day to inquire about the availability of audio-described tours.

The law firm informed him that the museum intends to prioritize self‑guided visits over organized tours and events.

The British Museum explained that the tapestry’s exposure to light is limited, which in turn restricts the number of visitors allowed.

Osman is seeking compensation, a formal declaration that he was discriminated against, and an order compelling the museum to revise its policies.

He further requests that staff receive disability awareness training and hopes the lawsuit will ensure blind and partially sighted individuals are properly considered in the planning of major exhibitions.

His solicitor noted that the Equality Act obliges service providers to anticipate the needs of disabled people and take reasonable steps to prevent substantial disadvantage.

“Our client seeks the same opportunity as sighted visitors to experience this exhibition.”

A British Museum spokesperson said the museum is “committed to making the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition as accessible as possible” and has collaborated with specialist access consultants.

Current provisions include a sensory map to help visitors prepare for their visit, as well as dedicated tours during the exhibition, including an in‑person audio‑described tour, the spokesperson said.

“We are also exploring the addition of a separate audio‑described tour within the exhibition’s app‑based audio guide.”

The 70‑meter (230‑foot) embroidery, illustrating the events leading up to the Norman Conquest of 1066, is on loan from France and will be displayed at the museum until 11 July 2027.
