The Bangladesh Cricket Board is preparing to reintroduce distinct captains for its white-ball and red-ball teams, moving away from the current all-format leadership model.
Cricbuzz, citing BCB officials, reports that the board will deliberate the proposal at its upcoming meeting on Wednesday, July 29, at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Who Will Be Leading Bangladesh In White Ball?
Litton Das, the current T20I captain and wicket-keeper batsman, is the leading contender to helm Bangladesh’s white-ball sides. He is expected to assume ODI captaincy from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, pending board approval.
The proposed change follows Mehidy’s underwhelming ODI record. Cricbuzz notes that the BCB is poised to evaluate his performance, with a split-captaincy approach for white-ball and red-ball formats gaining traction. Under this model, Nazmul Hossain Shanto would retain his role as Test captain.
Towhid Hridoy, Litton’s deputy in T20Is, is also being eyed for a similar role in ODIs. The board views Hridoy, who captained Bangladesh in the recent T20I series versus Zimbabwe and Australia—leading a 2-1 comeback win over Zimbabwe after an opening loss—as a promising future leader.
Initially, the BCB contemplated bringing back Najmul Hossain Shanto as ODI captain after his earlier removal. However, the board has since shifted its position, opting to appoint distinct leaders for white-ball and red-ball cricket.
The rationale behind the split is to let Shanto concentrate solely on Test cricket, while Litton Das would manage the limited-overs sides and coordinate with the white-ball squad.
Mehidy’s Report Card Ind ODI
Mehidy Hasan Miraz was named Bangladesh’s ODI captain on June 12, 2025, succeeding Shanto, and the BCB later extended his contract through the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Under his leadership, Bangladesh struggled in ODIs, especially on the road, securing just two victories in the 13 away matches he captained.
His appointment restored a system of three separate captains—Shanto in Tests, Mehidy in ODIs, and Litton in T20Is.
