BCCI names India squads for West Indies white-ball series as Rohit, Kohli and Jaiswal return

India have announced their squads for the upcoming limited-overs home series against the West Indies, with the opening match scheduled for September 27. Shubman Gill will continue as ODI captain, while Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return to the 50-over setup. KL Rahul has been named vice-captain, taking over the role from Shreyas Iyer, who served in that position during India’s recent ODI assignment against England.

The ODI squad combines experienced players with emerging options. Alongside Gill, Rohit and Kohli, the batting line-up features Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal and new call-up Naman Dhir. Jaiswal returns to the ODI side after playing in India’s Afghanistan series but missing the one-dayers against England. The left-hander has been added as an additional opening option.

The most notable selection decision comes in the wicketkeeping department. Rishabh Pant has been left out of the ODI squad, with Dhruv Jurel named as the second wicketkeeper. Pant will instead captain Rest of India in the Irani Cup.

The bowling group includes Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Kuldeep Yadav and new entrant Auqib Nabi. Ravindra Jadeja also remains in the squad, while Nitish Kumar Reddy has been withdrawn from the Asian Games to be available for the ODIs.

Shreyas Iyer to captain India’s T20I side

While Gill leads the ODI team, Shreyas Iyer will captain India in the T20I series against the West Indies. Tilak Varma has been appointed as his deputy. The T20I squad includes Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

The selection also gives young talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi another opportunity at international level. Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav are also part of the squad. Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson are the two wicketkeeping options for the T20I series, providing the selectors with greater flexibility in the shortest format.

Several players from England ODI tour miss out

Several players who featured in India’s ODI series against England have been left out of the West Indies ODI squad. Kishan, Sundar, Axar, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep and Dube are among those not selected for the 50-over side. Most of them are expected to be part of the Asian Games squad, with Rana the exception after being replaced by Yash.

Meanwhile, Varun Chakaravarthy has been ruled out of the Japan T20I and Asian Games because of a side strain. Vipraj Nigam has been named as his replacement. Iyer will captain India in the one-off T20I against Japan as well as the Asian Games campaign, which overlaps with the West Indies ODI series.
