Beck returned to his signature orchestrated acoustic style with the release of Ride Lonesome last month. On Tuesday night, the artist appeared on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show, performing ‘In The Night’—the lead single from his new LP—accompanied by a full string section, including fellow guest Sacha Baron Cohen on cello.

Sacha Baron Cohen is no stranger to the cello; the comedian revealed in 2020 that his first television appearance featured playing the instrument on Fanfare For Young Musicians. On Tonight Show, Cohen appeared to promote his new film Ali G: Who Iz I., though he performed straight rather than in character as Ali G. His cello contribution accompanied Beck’s set without the comedic persona, delivering a straight-faced performance during an otherwise musical segment.

Following the performance, Beck sat for an interview with Jimmy Fallon. The duo discussed the records that shaped him, including the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs soundtrack, Mississippi John Hurt, Gary Wilson, and Kraftwerk. Beck and Questlove reminisced about collaborating in the 1990s, and the singer noted that the Owen Wilson character Hansel in Zoolander was at least partially inspired by him. Beck also revealed he was once offered a cameo in Zoolander, which he declined in favor of David Bowie, who ultimately delivered the role. The interview segment is available below.

‘Ride Lonesome’ is now available via Capitol Records. Concurrently, Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G film debuts Friday, accompanied by its soundtrack album, executive produced by Andrew Watt and Hit-Boy with Jon Batiste featured. The track ‘Richer Than Elon,’ a follow-up commentary on Elon Musk, is also currently released.
