Authorities have launched a significant police operation in southwest Berlin following a reported hostage incident at a local supermarket on Friday evening.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 10 p.m. when an individual allegedly threatened a woman with a knife and took her hostage inside a Rewe supermarket.

The police operation remains active in the early hours of Saturday.

By approximately 7:30 a.m. Saturday, police confirmed to Die Zeit that tensions persisted at the scene. The supermarket is cordoned off, as reported by dpa.

Special operations officers have positioned themselves in front of the premises, with numerous patrol cars, ambulances, and fire department vehicles also present. In the early morning, officers deployed a ladder to assess the situation inside the supermarket.

“We are in regular contact with the hostage-taker,” a police representative stated to the dpa news agency.

Authorities have not disclosed whether the suspect and the victim are acquainted.

Employee witnesses who were inside the supermarket during the incident escaped unharmed and received medical attention from emergency personnel.

One staff member described the event to Bild: “The assailant was at the checkout, refused to place items on the conveyor belt, and suddenly produced a knife.”

Police have not verified this detailed account. Officials emphasized ongoing communication with the suspect and their commitment to resolving the situation peacefully.
